the pictures were lovely and all: but the writing by Ian Webb was uninspired and pretty boring.

also: it’s not like I need to be in people’s bid-niz when I read about their work, but as a person who’s inspired by my partner and parent’s creative partnership, perhaps I am a little into knowing how love and life relate.

this book does a little two-step around Gibb’s sexuality, and barely mentions his death. They do mention a “life-long friendship” with a man he lived and collaborated with: master knitter Kaffe Fassett, and a couple websites include him on a list of people who died of AIDS.  History is important, and gay history is important: I don’t understand what is gained or saved by not simply talking about this man’s life and his death.

Is the fact that maybe he was gay important to looking at his work or vision? no, probably not. But is important for a book talking about a designer in an of his time: i think it is important: to historical culture and gay culture…am i off base?
