veruca salt

March 19th, 2014 by Lizz

my favorite band during my high school years, will be releasing new songs in April. While we wait, let’s remember the good ole days.

From at 1998 list of “Veruca Salt Frequently asked Questions”
Q: Do any of the band members have internet access?

A: Stacy Jones apparently has an account on AOL, but his screen name is not public information. Aside from him, it does not appear as if any of the other members have internet access, and if any of them do, they’re not letting anyone know. In one interview, Steve Lack said he had a computer, but was vague about the internet. At the same time, Nina Gordon and Louise Post said they didn’t own computers yet. However, the band members are aware of the internet and their many fans that use it.

Wedding season: Paramount Ranch edition

March 19th, 2014 by Lizz

I think we are going to six weddings this spring/summer, which is almost as many as last summer.
I love weddings: they are fun! you get to hang out with your friends! they are about love! they are always the best party ever!
Each and every couple is unique, and everyone always gets creative with their weddings. And, in my mind, you have to be a good guest and dress the part, as in, you better match the wedding.

One of the weddings we are going to is in Paramount Ranch. It’s an awesome old western-town set in the middle of a park near Topanga Canyon. The couple is going all out: with LA-melting pot ladies-of-the-canyon-persian-rockabilly-metal–wild-west loveliness. It’s gonna be great.

so, what to wear to a Ranch in a Park, in May, that will be hot during the day, cool at night, where nothing is paved?

Upstate Simone Gown (Bonadrag), Karen Walker Super Worship Sunnies, a vintage Raffia Baseball hat,  This is Ground Tomo leather pouch in Dijon, a Bandelier Necklace (Mohawk General), Dolce Vita flatforms  (Urban Outfitters) for a little height in the dirt, and a small, light weight blanket as a shawl for late night (Peru Inca Market).

currently on my vintage hunt list: a really great, really detailed commemorative silk embroidered bomber jacket.  Like this.

life changing fashion

about a month ago, I got all white Nike Air Max’s and I think there’s been one day that I haven’t worn them since.

Currently trying to figure out if I can wear them  to a black tie wedding at the Parker next weekend.

lavender country

March 17th, 2014 by Lizz

last night we saw Lavender Country, who’s 1973 LP was hailed as the first openly gay country album, play at the Church on York in Highland Park.

The show (touching, awesome, ornery) was organized by our friends at Paradise of Bachelors, and you can buy that 1973 album on the POB website here.

Piol: tested

March 11th, 2014 by Lizz

So, a while ago I wrote about a new company, Piol, that makes made to measure dresses in the US, and recommends silhouettes, colors, and prints based on your coloring and shape. At the time, I had a lot of questions about the site, the company, and the quality of the dresses.

Well, Piol got in touch, and they graciously gave me a dress to help answer some of my queries. I filled out the form and waited a couple weeks. Honest MaterialConcern disclosures: I don’t love the prints they have, so I went for black silk. Also, none of the dress shapes were exactly my style, so I went for a classic little black sheath dress.

When the dress arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the weight and quality of the silk fabric, and the silk lining. The zipper was also high quality. The seams (both inside and outside) were smooth and straight. This was a very well made dress.

I had thought that I might not be the best person to test how great their fit is, as generally, things in my size fit right, right off the rack. However, things off the rack don’t fit like this dress does….which is to say it fits extremely well:

So! Answers to our questions: Piol does a great job on fit and quality is silk and sewing, and it does take a long time, but they keep you posted on progress.

I’m not sure how many woman can support Piol as its currently set up & targeted. It could be really great for Bridesmaids or more casual brides. And if the company had the capability to let you upload your own print it could be amazing. Eventually I’m sure they’ll adding more sophisticated prints as well as more silhouettes…I’m now dreaming of a custom blazer!

In the meantime, I need to figure out where to wear this super flattering dress…please let me know if you know of  a board meeting I can commandeer, an episode of Scandal that needs a background actor, or a French president’s funeral where I can freak out the real mistresses.
